Alias Addressing

The Scheme must support payment addressing using multiple alias types and provides alias lookup and mapping services that maps an alias to a digital financial service provider. Alias addressing provides an alternative to addressing using an account number, and may include, but not be limited to a phone number, national ID number, email address, a randomly generated code, or another identifier.

How to Implement

Guidance

Design context appropriate alias options with future flexibility.

While reasonable to expect that most end users will have a mobile number that could serve as their alias, the Scheme should not assume that a mobile number is the preference for everyone. Having an option to use a different alias will encourage greater adoption and also allow end users to register an alias if they have multiple accounts. Ease of sharing the alias is essential where smart phones are not widely available.

Communicate the pros and cons of different aliases.

The Scheme and DFSPs should organize local context appropriate communication to end users on the pros and cons of different alias options, and specifically, the advantages of using an alias that does not include personal information, protects end user safety, and utilizes communication methods most appropriate to women.

Why It Matters

Aliases ensure privacy and ease for end users, and a choice between them allows an end user to choose the best option for their needs. Non-phone number identifiers may be especially important for ensuring privacy and should always be made available.

Women’s Inclusion

Women may face context-specific preferences on willingness to share phone numbers, national IDs, and other identifiers. These unique privacy concerns related to potential alias types, require thoughtful design and optionality in alias addressing to ensure that women end-users are able to safely transact.

Fraud Mitigation

Providing multiple options for an alias, including options that do not include personally identifiable information, empowers end users to choose an alias most suitable for them. When combined with standardized account naming, providing an account name that is relatable to the receiver, the Scheme helps to limit likelihood of fraudsters impersonating other users with false account names.
